Returning to the UK from abroad?

You may be surprised to find out that even though you may have kept up to date with your National Insurance contributions;

-       You don’t automatically have access to the NHS when you return to the UK (for up to 6 months), and can only obtain ‘emergency care’. It is for your local NHS/Primary Care Trust to establish whether each patient is ordinarily resident (for the purpose of healthcare).

-       If you don’t satisfy the local NHS/Care Trust you are entitled to free treatment you may have to pay.

-       This is also true if you go on holiday to the UK!

-       You will have to establish (re-establish) and prove residency before getting access eg to a GP

-       Unless you transfer any ‘rights’ from your existing health plan to a new one in the UK (without breaking continuity) you may have problems obtaining new cover (eg if you have had serious or life-threatening illnesses in the past)

If you have a Sanitas or a Bupa International health plan and would like me to try to transfer your rights to a Bupa UK policy, please contact me ...

(before you cancel your policy – if you cancel too soon you won't have any way of transferring any rights!)
